Repair or replace?
A local problem on sound guttering can often be repaired. Holes in several places, or fascia that cannot hold the spouting, may mean replacement.
The short version
This is guidance, not a DIY checklist, and not a reason to get on the roof yourself. We confirm the call after we have looked at the guttering.
Usually a repair
- Leaking at one or two joints or seams
- Sagging from brackets or fall, not a collapsed gutter
- Overflow at a single outlet or corner
- Surface rust that has not holed the metal
- A downpipe, rainwater head or blockage doing the damage
Usually replacement / re-spouting
- Rust through in several sections
- Most of the guttering is distorted, holed or previously patched
- The guttering is too small for the roof and Auckland rain
- The fascia can no longer carry the spouting safely
- An internal gutter that keeps failing in the same places
What changes the call in Auckland
Surface rust or rust through
On the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast, salt marks steel quickly. Surface rust can often be treated. Rust through in several sections is usually a replacement job rather than a local repair.
Overflow that looks like the gutter has failed

Internal gutters
If you have an internal gutter, the repair-or-convert decision is different from replacing eaves spouting. Internal, box and concealed gutters.
Fascia
If the board has gone, you do not have a gutter-only repair. That is fascia and spouting together.
